Winhorse Retreat Center offers clean,
safe and modern facilities — kitchen, bathroom facilities,
dorm facilities and a beautiful shrine space with floor to ceiling
windows. The high ceilings and many windows provide a bright and
airy atmosphere in the main meditation room which seats approximately
15 people.
Originally built as a passive solar showplace
in the early 1970s, its passive solar benefits are still a wonder
as the building fairly heats itself on clear, cold winter days,
and stays cool in the summer. The building is super-insulated
and the north side is bermed into the earth for further insulation.
WRC has two separate spaces, which allow two events or retreats
to occur simultaneously. WRC East has 3 bedrooms with 5 beds, a
convertible futon couch, a full bath, kitchen and dining space;
WRC-West has 3 bedrooms with 4 beds, a convertible futon couch,
a galley kitchen and two half-bathrooms, including a shower stall.
Both sides are heated by gas heaters, although when the sun is out,
there will be a sizable heat gain from the south windows. There
are also electric fans and space heaters. Whatever temperature adjustments
you employ, please be mindful to conserve to the best of your ability.
Although beds, pillows, and blankets are provided, you must bring
your own towels and linens. There are refrigerators, stoves, toasters
and pots and pans, utensils, bowls, plates, glasses and a microwave
oven in both kitchens. You must bring your own food with you, and
we ask you to pack your own garbage out.
Overflow accommodations for larger groups can also be arranged
through our neighbors at Bright Dawn Retreat Center, which has an
additional 6 bedrooms. Pitching a tent is also optional.
Because of WRC’s prior affiliation with the High Wind Association
its users are invited to utilize High Wind’s land and hiking/
cross-country ski trails that lead directly into the 15,000 acre
Kettle Moraine State Forest. Our land also includes the ridge to
the Northeast of the building. It's a lovely place for outdoor practice. View retreat center video. |
